Show Notes

In 2009, Todd Bol erected the very first Little Free Library book exchange in his front yard in Hudson, Wisconsin. Crafted from an old wooden garage door he didnโ€™t want to throw out, Todd built the library as an ode to his late mother, a schoolteacher and lifelong reader.

In the days after, Todd watched as the simple โ€œtake a book, share a bookโ€ concept resonated with his neighbors, sparking new conversations between them. Soon people were asking Todd for their own little libraries.

By the time of Toddโ€™s death in October 2018, there were more than 75,000 registered Little Free Library book exchanges around the world in 88 countries, โ€œfrom the Netherlands, Brazil, and Japan to Australia, Ghana, and Pakistan.โ€

To learn more about how Toddโ€™s simple idea turned into a global movement, we caught up with Margret Aldrich, who leads Marketing & Communication for the organization and also wrote The Little Free Library Book.
